Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I have a doctorate in psychotherapy, my main passion is advocating for nonhuman animal rights. I condemn all cruelty to nonhuman animals and therefore follow a vegan lifestyle. I would like to connect with other animal activists from all over the world. The fur trade is one of the most abhorrent practices on this planet. Innocent animals are subjected to prolonged suffering for a trivial fashion item. As the chairperson of Fur Free SA. we campaign towards ending the global fur industry. This might not happen in my lifetime, but even if I leave one footprint behind, that is one step closer to the goal. This blog is a forum to discuss all aspects of the fur industry. It also raises issues around animal activism in general. Johannesburg is a crazy city and I need to escape from time to time. This photo was taken next to the magnificent Zambezi river.

IF YOU WOULDN’T WEAR YOUR DOG, WHY WOULD YOU WEAR A FOX?

A big thank you to Marilyn from farmerandthevegan blog for forwarding this delightful story to me. Stacey from Our-Compass blog also posted it. So I guess a lot of you have already read this feel-good story, but in the spirit good-will I would like to share it :).

We’d like you to meet Sniffer and Tinni, a pair of best friends that met while they were both strolling through a Norwegian forest.

Tinni the dog and Sniffer the fox became quick friends, prompting the pooch’s owner Torgeir Berge to start a campaign against thehighly controversial fur trade after he noticed “how similar foxes and dogs actually are,” calling the fox the “dog of the forest.”

Berge and his friend Berit Helberg plan to release a book sometime next year chronicling the duo, because “no animals should be living like the animals in the fur industry are living.” According to animal advocacy group PETA, many creatures bound for the fur industry are allegedly kept in small, restrictive cages for their entire lives.

Berge and Helberg said they plan to donate a portion of the proceeds to help save the Sniffers of the world, and we can totally see why.

The pair put their motivation quite simply in a description of the project: “Why [should] some animals be in small, narrow, claustrophobic cages without freedom just because … human kind wants to look good?”

If you want to stay away from fur, the Humane Society keeps an up-to-date list of fur-free retailers around the country, which you can see here. For now, take a look at more photos of the pair below, and head on over to Berge’s Facebook page to see more moments from Tinni and Sniffer’s touching friendship.

  2. What a beautiful story and pictures. They really respresent what real friendship is like. Thank you for standing up for the animals, Emy. We can’t believe that there are still people that can wear fur, especially the young people nowadays with the fur collars around their neck. One of the first posts of our blog was about the cruelty of Chinese dogs. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story and beautiful photos which clearly show that animals are sentient beings capable of friendship and much more. Killing animals for their fur is an outrageous injustice against these thinking feeling beings. In the modern world there is no need whatsoever under any circumstance to kill any creature for his meat, his skin or his fur. As usual it is all about money and insatiable greed and the vanity of silly self centred women with more money than sense or compassion.

Totally agree cinnabar! The fur industry tortures animals only for human greed and vanity. It is so important to raise awareness wherever we can. Thanks for caring.
