Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I have a doctorate in psychotherapy, my main passion is advocating for nonhuman animal rights. I condemn all cruelty to nonhuman animals and therefore follow a vegan lifestyle. I would like to connect with other animal activists from all over the world. The fur trade is one of the most abhorrent practices on this planet. Innocent animals are subjected to prolonged suffering for a trivial fashion item. As the chairperson of Fur Free SA. we campaign towards ending the global fur industry. This might not happen in my lifetime, but even if I leave one footprint behind, that is one step closer to the goal. This blog is a forum to discuss all aspects of the fur industry. It also raises issues around animal activism in general. Johannesburg is a crazy city and I need to escape from time to time. This photo was taken next to the magnificent Zambezi river.

There is currently a movement the Great ape personhood, which is trying to extend the status of personhood to nonhuman members of the “great ape family” i.e. chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. The motive is to try and institute legal protection to these beings who are often the victims of greed and cruelty by humans.

Why is this taking so long!

Anyone who can watch this moving footage below and not believe that gorillas are sentient beings, cannot classify themselves as humans.

It is well worth watching to the end.

As Jane Goodall (primatologist, ethologist, anthropologist, and UN Messenger of Peace) stated,

Chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans have been living for hundreds of thousands of years in their forest, living fantastic lives, never overpopulating, never destroying the forest. I would say that they have been in a way more successful than us as far as being in harmony with the environment.

  3. Dear Emy, thank you for posting about legal personhood. This is so important to protect and to free those enslaved. I urge everyone to follow and support the Nonhuman Rights Project. In May they will be once again in court defending their plaintiffs Leo and Hercules, two research chimpanzees. The judge has granted right to be represented, but now it will be the turn of the research lab to testify why they can imprison them.

Something so simple and natural, not to harm, becomes so cumbersome and painful.

    Thank you, my friend.
