Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I have a doctorate in psychotherapy, my main passion is advocating for nonhuman animal rights. I condemn all cruelty to nonhuman animals and therefore follow a vegan lifestyle. I would like to connect with other animal activists from all over the world. The fur trade is one of the most abhorrent practices on this planet. Innocent animals are subjected to prolonged suffering for a trivial fashion item. As the chairperson of Fur Free SA. we campaign towards ending the global fur industry. This might not happen in my lifetime, but even if I leave one footprint behind, that is one step closer to the goal. This blog is a forum to discuss all aspects of the fur industry. It also raises issues around animal activism in general. Johannesburg is a crazy city and I need to escape from time to time. This photo was taken next to the magnificent Zambezi river.

Last Sunday I joined Ban Animal Trading’s (BAT) demonstration against the reptile expo. held at a local “events” centre.

In South Africa these reptiles are seen as exotic pets, as they often come from other countries.

This trade in exotic pets is unregulated.

These reptiles are bred in captivity or trapped in the wild and then sold by unscrupulous people.

The fashion industries also exploits reptiles:

Every year millions of reptiles are farmed or hunted only to be skinned for fashion items.

According to Occupy for Animals,

Python shoes, boots, belts, jackets and skirts are being fashioned from snakes’ skin and items made from exotic skins come with a high price – and that it’s paid by the animals who are torn away from their jungle homes and cruelly killed; this illicit trade can even have terrible consequences for fragile eco-systems around the world.

Snakes killed for their skin are often nailed to trees and skinned alive before being tossed into a pile to die. They can suffer for days before succumbing to shock or dehydration. Pythons often have a hose inserted into their mouth and are pumped full of water to make them easier to skin. Alligators on farms are often beaten with hammers and sometimes take up to two hours to die.

Recently Beyonce was criticised for her custom-made sneakers, which included the skin of reptiles.BeyonceThese creatures need our help. Would you please sign this petition to the European Union?

Reblogged this on Ravens-Tree.com and commented:
Is there no end to the barbaric cruelty and horror that man inflicts on innocent feeling creatures. These celebrities should be made to directly witness the sickness they support! Shame on all those perpetuate this evil.

  2. Great post! You hear about angora fur and the plight of rabbits but never about reptiles… and this terrible practice should be known about and stopped – I’ve signed the petition and shall reblog 🙂

Thank you midnightflixy. What you say is so true.
As wrong as it is, I think people don’t see reptiles as “cute” like fluffy bunnies and so don’t have the same sympathy. The suffering that these creatures go through is horrific.
      All the best,
      Emy

This is just so shocking, how can people be so cruel. I know I have said this before but I cannot understand the mentality of people who will skin an animal alive or beat him or her to death. There has to be something seriously wrong with such people. Have signed the petition, lets hope we can get this brutality stopped. there is no place in any modern society for such cruelty or for such cruel people.Time also for the fickle minded followers of this hideous fashion to learn some morality.
