Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I have a doctorate in psychotherapy, my main passion is advocating for nonhuman animal rights. I condemn all cruelty to nonhuman animals and therefore follow a vegan lifestyle. I would like to connect with other animal activists from all over the world. The fur trade is one of the most abhorrent practices on this planet. Innocent animals are subjected to prolonged suffering for a trivial fashion item. As the chairperson of Fur Free SA. we campaign towards ending the global fur industry. This might not happen in my lifetime, but even if I leave one footprint behind, that is one step closer to the goal. This blog is a forum to discuss all aspects of the fur industry. It also raises issues around animal activism in general. Johannesburg is a crazy city and I need to escape from time to time. This photo was taken next to the magnificent Zambezi river.

So many people justify cruelty towards nonhuman animals with the argument that animals are considered property in law. In other words, they are simply products to be used, abused and traded. This is certainly the view of those involved with fur production.

The New Zealand Government, this year (2015), has formally recognised animals as sentient beings through its Animal Welfare Amendment Bill.

Please dont wear usAccording to the chairperson of the National Animal Ethics Advisory Committee, Dr Virginia Williams,

“To say that animals are sentient is to state explicitly that they can experience both positive and negative emotions, including pain, distress and other forms of suffering”.

Although this is a step forward for animal rights, when will the rest of the world come to its senses?

Dedicated to all nonhuman animals who live and die in captivity for human greed!

Given that New Zealand has a high economic dependency on sheep farming, for wool as well as carrion, doesn’t this place it in a bit of a predicament? There is also a possum fur industry as possums, introduced from Australia, are considered to be pests.

It is difficult to know how NewZealand is going to implement this law. I suspect it merely ensures that animals are kept in better conditions, which then just makes humans feel better about exploiting other species (sigh).

The one time that I have visited there, I noticed that the ‘Made in New Zealand’ shop in Auckland Airport sold garments made from possum fur; so this is marketed as an indigenous industry, yet the reasons that possums are allowed to be killed is because they are not indigenous. There is an irony in there somewhere.

Thanks for the information,Secular Vegan. I will do some further reading about the possum fur market. Just ban all fur, I think. Its all senseless!

  3. We’ve a while, generations I suspect. My fear is that the animal welfare advocates win out in their human meat campaigns and concessions over the animal rights advocates.

Sadly I think that you are right, Peter. Keeping animals in better conditions merely appeases the guilt of humans. Still, at least people are starting to broaden the notion of sentience beyond themselves.
