Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I have a doctorate in psychotherapy, my main passion is advocating for nonhuman animal rights. I condemn all cruelty to nonhuman animals and therefore follow a vegan lifestyle. I would like to connect with other animal activists from all over the world. The fur trade is one of the most abhorrent practices on this planet. Innocent animals are subjected to prolonged suffering for a trivial fashion item. As the chairperson of Fur Free SA. we campaign towards ending the global fur industry. This might not happen in my lifetime, but even if I leave one footprint behind, that is one step closer to the goal. This blog is a forum to discuss all aspects of the fur industry. It also raises issues around animal activism in general. Johannesburg is a crazy city and I need to escape from time to time. This photo was taken next to the magnificent Zambezi river.

Canada just got a new Prime Minister. After a decade of conservative (Canada’s republican) rule, the people of Canada recently elected a Liberal (Canada’s version of democratic party) government with a young and optimistic Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. Some have criticized Trudeau’s victory for his looks and a name similar to other celebrities like Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber. While many try to remain neutral and objective, there is only one problem… he wears fur. His whole family supports the killing of animals to provide fur coats.

  1. Yep, but for most people this is not an issue however the activists here remember this & the message behind it. Will be interesting if he is open to changing things for animals or ignoring them altogether.

Hi Purr and Roar (Tori) The idea that wearing animal fur is not an issue in Canada is very distressing 😦 Granted the temperatures are icy but there are synthetic alternatives if people cared enough.

      • Hi Emy I would say that there are many who are against it but it seems more who simply who don’t care either way. We have these horrible coats Canada Goose which I am sure you have heard of with coyote fur trim hoods you see them on everyone including kids! This horrible trend has also spun off many other fur trimmed coats that are marketed as the ultimate outdoor winter coat. As soon as late Sept hit people were already wearing them I can’t go anywhere in winter without seeing them. We have campaigns here to educate people about the cruelty & alternatives to these coats but I feel like it’s getting worse. A few years ago I was part of a silent demonstration to show people what is behind these coats & how cruel trapping is… there were educational materials & an actual trap to show people. It was distressing to see people who knew but didn’t care – the indifference was shocking.

Canada Goose coats are totally cruel ~ not only the coyote fur trim but also padded with down feathers 😦

There are some days when I question the point in raising awareness when people, as you say, are just indifferent towards cruelty to animals.

In Canada wearing fur is probably considered to be ‘patriotic’. Pardon my cynicism but I doubt whether there is any real difference between the two main political parties in Canada, any more than there is between establishment parties in any other country. This Trudeau is an establishment brat, born into a political dynasty, so he was bound to be picked for high office.

Thanks for the comment, Secular Vegan. It is sad how many “leaders” consider it acceptable to wear animal fur items. The royals in Britain and Denmark have a particular fondness for fur. If only we could debunk the myth that fur is noble!!

Tragic, too many people just don’t care and I am deeply saddened that the Prime Minister and family promote this barbaric “fashion”. What do we expect from people who eat animals and do not have compassion?

    With compassion,

    ❤ carmen
