Greetings from Johannesburg, South Africa. Although I have a doctorate in psychotherapy, my main passion is advocating for nonhuman animal rights. I condemn all cruelty to nonhuman animals and therefore follow a vegan lifestyle. I would like to connect with other animal activists from all over the world. The fur trade is one of the most abhorrent practices on this planet. Innocent animals are subjected to prolonged suffering for a trivial fashion item. As the chairperson of Fur Free SA. we campaign towards ending the global fur industry. This might not happen in my lifetime, but even if I leave one footprint behind, that is one step closer to the goal. This blog is a forum to discuss all aspects of the fur industry. It also raises issues around animal activism in general. Johannesburg is a crazy city and I need to escape from time to time. This photo was taken next to the magnificent Zambezi river.

2. Petitions and letters against the Canadian seal hunt:

  • Petition to the Canadian High Commissioner in Australia @ http://bit.ly/1SSpa09
  • Petition to Prime Minister of Canada,Justin Trudeau to end The Canadian Seal Hunt @ http://chn.ge/1TYr8fb
  • Petition to Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and 2 others to stop Canada’s commercial slaughter of baby seals for fur @http://chn.ge/1nhkDXU
  • Peta2’s letter to the Canadian authorities. Please scroll down to the end to find the message @ http://bit.ly/1RMF21R
  • A request to the Canadian PM and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans to please end the seal hunt @ http://g.ifaw.org/1Lq1UFm
  • A pre-written letter to the Canadian government requesting a federal buyout @http://bit.ly/21bN8DL  (A federal buyout means that instead of wasting tax money on a hunt with no market, the Canadian government can actually save money by paying sealers a fair monetary amount to give up their license to kill.)

Thanks, Emy, for the addresses of the Canadian authorities who could put an end to the iniquitous seal hunt. Do you know what happened to Canadian Senator Macharb’s bill S-210 to phase out commercial sealing in Canada? At the time, 2011, it got a lot of support and it looked as if a tipping point was nearing. There was also some suggestion that the seal hunt in Canada was largely political as the two main areas where sealing takes place are swing states which politicians need to woo come an election. It is unbelievable that even Russia , who used to import 95 % of the pelts, has now banned the import of seal pelts plus the Eu, Mexico and China. There are no markets for this product!

Hi Heather 🙂 You are right about the seal hunts being a political issue. With this mindset compassion just doesn’t feature, although I think the number of seals massacred is decreasing. I don’t know what happened to Canadian Senator Macharb’s bill S-210 to phase out commercial sealing in Canada. That was five years ago and the seal hunt is still happening!
    Warm wishes ❤

Looking at the photos of slaughtered seals for fur, you would think it was early eighteen-hundreds….not 2016!! Signed all petitions .

When is this atrocity to defenceless animals ever going to end? I hope these petitions make a difference. I was not able to sign the seventh petition as it took me straight to the “Thank You” confirmation page rather than the petition signing page.

I really hope, as I have hoped every year, that this year the Canadian government will finally do the right thing.

Much appreciated, cinnabar. It is shocking that this seal slaughter still happens! We must continue to put pressure on to governments that sanction this cruelty.
