A gentle reminder that caring people do not wear animal fur.

Thank you Bont Voor Dieren (Holland) for this beautiful video, recently released.

On December 20, 2016 the Dutch court upheld the ban on mink farming in the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has 160 fur farms and is the fourth biggest fur farming country in the world, after China, Denmark and Poland.

This has been a long legal battle with fur farmers and sadly for the animals there is a phase out period, meaning the ban will only take full effect in 2024.

Nevertheless, this is another step towards ending the global trade in fur.

There is a long chain of people who are accountable for keeping the fur market alive.

It starts with all those responsible for the many processes in fur production and ends with consumers buying fur goods.

Fashion designers and models who promote fur fashion, too, play a role in this brutal industry.

So I was extremely happy to read that Australian model Ruby Jean Wilson has taken a stance against fur in the fashion industry. Ruby Jean turned up at a shoot, only to realise she was expected to wear fur. Her response was to walk out!

Thank you Ruby Jean for putting compassion over fashion.

FUR TRINKETS: Not compassionate

Of late, I have been horrified at the amount of disgusting fur key rings and bag charms that people are casually displaying.

I can only assume that these individuals are unaware of the extreme suffering to which an animal was subjected for such frivolous items.

Or perhaps they just don’t care!fur-key-ringsI believe that NO compassionate person would knowingly support the fur market in any way, but hey, maybe compassion is an outdated value.

The good news of the week is that on 29 NOVEMBER 2016, fur farming in JAPAN came to an end.japanThis was not entirely a compassionate decision but also one to protect the environment.

Since implementation of the Japanese Invasive Alien Species Act in 2006 it became illegal to build new mink fur farms in Japan.

An unlicensed fur farm in Niigata had received multiple warnings from the Ministry of Environment for violating both the Invasive Alien Species Act and the Act on Welfare and Management of Animals. In 2015, after observing serious welfare issues at this fur farm and spotting escaped mink, Animal Rights Center Japan again reported the unlicensed illegal activity of the farm.

After receiving another warning, the farmer decided that the farm was no longer economically viable and therefore closed.

Given that this was Japan’s last remaining fur farm, Japan joins a growing number of countries that are leaving fur farming behind.
